The base is half of the table, and it gets almost none of the attention. It decides whether the table wobbles, how easily it can be cleaned around, and whether a guest in a wheelchair can get to it.
Four families cover almost every layout. A single central column is the most space-efficient and easiest to seat around, because nothing sits where a knee wants to be. Cross or spider bases spread the load over four feet and hold larger tops steadily. Four-leg frames are the most stable and the worst for seating. Cantilever bases free the whole underside where fixed seating demands it.
Every base here has adjustable feet as standard and a rated maximum top size — ask for that figure and compare it against the top you are actually ordering. The working rule for spread is roughly two-thirds of the top width.
