Melamine faced MDF is the entry point of the table top range and it is honest about what it is. In a low-traffic room it performs perfectly well, and its failure mode is entirely predictable: moisture reaches the core at an edge or a screw hole, the board swells, and the top is beyond saving.
That makes the edge the whole specification. Ask for a properly sealed edge — ABS or postformed rather than thin banding — and keep these tops away from wet service points and terrace doors.
Where the room turns tables hard, compact laminate is the better answer at a modest step up in cost.
